At the cutting edge of waste disposal: How do you get rid of a broken knife?

After a recent near disastrous knife incident, in which the blade snapped inside the joint between it and the handle, with blade and handle becoming divorced from one another as I was chopping something, I have a puzzling problem to resolve- what is the best way to throw away a broken knife? In a more litigious country I’d be risking a major lawsuit if I simply threw it in one of the wheelie bins behind our building but I’m yet to see any specialist knife disposal facilities anywhere.

Should I treat it as I would broken glass, and put it inside a box or other suitable protective sheath before putting it in the bin as normal? I don’t really want to leave it in the kitchen for too long, inviting the inevitable accident.
